The result demonstrates continued support for Labour’s focus on delivering real change for working people and local communities!
Labour members and supporters across Leeds North East will welcome Labour’s convincing victory in the Makerfield by-election, where Andy Burnham secured a strong win, increased Labour’s share of the vote, and defeated Reform UK by a majority of around 9,000 votes.
Burnham stood as the Labour Co-op candidate and secured just over half of the vote, in a result that saw Labour increase its support by around ten percentage points compared with the previous election.
The result is being widely seen as a significant endorsement of Labour’s focus on delivering real change for working people and local communities.
Speaking after the result, Burnham stressed the importance of continuing to earn voters’ trust through action and delivery, highlighting the need for politics to focus on the issues people face every day, including the cost of living, public services, and economic opportunity.
For Labour members in Leeds North East, the result is a reminder of the importance of strong local campaigning and community engagement. Across our constituency, activists and volunteers work year-round to listen to residents, champion local concerns, and promote Labour values.
The lesson from Makerfield is clear: when Labour listens, leads and delivers, voters respond.
Congratulations to Andy Burnham, the campaign team, and all those who helped secure this important result.
