Moortown Branch Campaigns for 7th May 2026 Local Elections

With local elections taking place in May 2026, the Moortown branch is continuing its community campaigning across Moortown, parts of Meanwood, the Carr Manors and the western end of Street Lane.

The branch is supporting Laura Jane Fisher as its candidate for ward councillor, as part of its efforts to engage with residents and represent local priorities in the run-up to the election.

The branch is led by Chair Cllr Mohammed Shahzad, with Sonia Matykiewicz serving as Secretary, helping coordinate activity and outreach across the area.

Local councillors in the area have focused on community engagement and practical local improvements. This has included regular resident conversations and advice surgeries, helping people raise concerns and access support on local issues such as housing, services and neighbourhood matters. Work has also supported environmental improvements and cleaner streets, alongside involvement in community projects and local initiatives aimed at strengthening the area.

Campaigning takes place throughout the year, with members visiting a different part of the ward each month to speak with residents. These sessions are informal, welcoming, and designed to build stronger connections while understanding local concerns. They are also intended to be a social and enjoyable way to get to know the community.

No prior experience is needed to get involved, and new participants are always supported by more experienced members. Training is provided, and anyone interested can simply turn up. Campaign sessions often conclude with an opportunity to continue conversations over lunch or drinks.

As the election approaches, the branch says it will continue focusing on listening to residents and encouraging wider participation, while sharing updates on local work and community priorities across Moortown and Meanwood.
